Chocolate and Churros

Eating Chocolate and Churros!

Eating Chocolate and Churros!

Chocolate and Churros are a Spanish tradition, eaten either for breakfast or a mid afternoon snack and is a social event for the Spanish! Just as you’d meet for a coffee people meet for Chocolate and Churros and a chat in a cafe or bar during the day.

Churros!

Churros!

The churros are small warm donuts in the shape of long sticks dipped into a cup of warm melted chocolate, yum! Normally you dip your churro into the warm chocolate and eat it all together. It’s a long running tradition dating back to the 19th century when it was a cheap option and popular among the people in Madrid. With the warm chocolate they’re a nice way to keep warm when it’s cold!

Each week Mester Salamanca offers chocolate and churros to the students in the Salamanca school as part of the cultural program that we run alongside the language courses. The students love it, and the teachers too!

The teachers like them too!

The churros are relatively easy to make and are similar to making the pancakes you eat on pancake day at home! The batter is made up the same with water, flour and salt, fried and then  sprinkled with sugar. The melted chocolate that accompanies it can either be pure melted chocolate or made easier to dip with by adding some milk!

Don’t forget to come to class on Tuesday in Salamanca and try some, or pop out with your friends to try some in a local café!

Tapas Fayre in Granada

Granada

The city of Granada

The restaurant Damasqueros won the competition with a tapas of chickpeas, and the landlord received his body weight in extra virgin olive oil and a jamón! There were all sorts of different types of food on offer, including vegetables, savoury pastries, tapas elaborated with wine and croquettes. The judges based their decision on different aspects of the event; presentation, taste, ingredients from Granada, the quality of service and general feel of the establishment.

Tapas!

On the Tapas Tour!

Every week Mester Spanish Language Courses in Granada offers to all of its students a Tapas tour of the city to try some of the best tapas available. Tapas are a big part of Spanish culture and you can taste some of the best food in Tapas bars! The students always have loads of fun and it’s a nice activity to get to try some new food and get to know the other students, whether you come alone or in a group program.

The teachers show you the best places to go for food across Granada, and not only that but the school offers cookery classes too as part of the cultural programme to show you how to make some of the Tapas that you try on the Granada Tapas Tour!

The event was hosted by King Alfred’s School teacher Eva Sanchez and 9 teams competed for the prize, a trip to study with Mester in Salamanca! Two girls, Constance and Hannah from Sevenoaks school won the trip and will be coming to study Spanish in Salamanca with Mester for free!

The event included debating between all the teams followed by semi-finals and the finals to win the prize. Teachers and students were there together, all impressed by the level of Spanish spoken by all of the competitors. There was even a break for all with Spanish Tapas, and everything decorated in red and yellow!

The afternoon was a huge success and everyone had a good time. After the initial surprise of the prize the girls were really excited about the trip and we look forward to greeting them in Salamanca!

They’ll be taking a Spanish Language Course with us and making the most of our Cultural Program and enjoying the city!
