Salamanca Activities for December!

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

There’s a new selection of activities available for the people of Salamanca and the students who study Spanish here.  Ranging from art exhibitions and concerts to monologues and musicals, there really is something for everyone and the majority and a very student-friendly price!

To kick start the Christmas season, for one month in Salamanca there will be ice-skating available.  With a two-for-one deal on Wednesdays and special prices for groups, it really is an economic way to get into the Christmas spirit (and a fun exercise too!).

For a little quieter activity, the “Descubriendo Belén” exhibition is now open at the Sala Caja Duero, until the 10th January.  Fitting in with Christmas, it’s a vision of the birth of of Jesus from the point of biew of the artsist José Luis Mayo Lebrija.  There is a series of nativity scenes with realist figures, naturalist environment and hints at traditional nativity scenes.  It’s a great way to enjoy the build up to Christmas and see work from an artist so important in his sector.

And remember, if it’s art you’re interested in, not far away from Salamanca in Palencia, there’s a pop-art exhibition featuring work from vital artists of that sector – including the legendary Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns.  Art fans hav until the 3rd January to make the way to see it  – and it really is worth the trip – Salamanca is surrounded by fantastic places to which to take excursions!

Moving from the tranquil to the noisey, there’s lots of music on offer this holiday season in Salamanca.  Madrid pop-rock band Pereza will be playing at the Multiusos venue on Friday 4th December and then later, the venue will play host to David Bisbal on Friday 18th December.  Both stars of the “Cuarenta Principales”, they’re sure to be spectacular shows!  To see Pereza, prices range from 19 to 26 Euros whilst David Bisbal’s show comes out a little moer expensive at 28 to 36 Euros.  Either way, if you’re looking to treat yourself this Christmas, a Spanish pop concert’s a great way to do it!

Michelin Stars fall in Castilla y León!

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

The news of the newest Michelin Star update has been leaked – and with good results for Castilla y León!  The new León restaurant Cocinados has won the seventh star of the Castilla y León region, very much pleasing its owners Yolanda León and Juan José Pérez.  Furthermore, El Llanten, a restaurant in the centre of Valladolid (another city of the Castilla y León region) has been nominated for the 2010 guide, which allows it to receive a star in the next edition.

Other Castilla y León cities are not short of stars either – Zamora has two (in the restaurants El Rincón de Antonio and El Ermitaño), Salamanca’s Víctor Gutiérrez counts himself – and his restaurant of the name – with a star and Segovia’s Villena restaurant is amongst the star-owners too.

The awards haven’t come without criticism, however.  Many argue that the system is snobby and injust, favouring French gastronomy all too much and leaving aside the most new, dynamic up-and-coming chefs.

We have to ask ourselves – how much attention do we really pay to this guide?  Surely taste is a completely personal thing and not necessarily the rich and expensive food, often with affluent associations, is a dish favoured by the masses.  There is, however, a great number of people ready to save up and pay out of budget, just to dine in a Michelin restaurant.

...A typical Spanish paella dish?

What do you think?  Salamanca has some great restaurants which aren’t Michelin starred but are definitely worth the trouble to go to – Zazu in Plaza de la Libertad and El Alquimista in Plaza de San Cristobal are all favourites of residents and a great choice for students who study Spanish in Salamanca to take their parents should they be visiting the city!

Whatsmore, there are hundreds of great tapas restaurants, many of which Mester students will visit on the weekly tapas yours, that are cheap and serve good quality, authentic Spanish food – a great way to socialise and enhance your language learning trip!

So to which restaurant or bar would you give a Michelin Star to?

New Art Arrives in Salamanca!

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

From the beginning of December Salamanca’s Palacio de Congresos, as part of the Salamanca City of Culture scheme, will be hosting the exhibition “El Mundo es un Escenario” (“The World is a Stage”), a selection of pieces from different artists, working with different mediums such as photography, sculpture and painting.

It’s the fifth edition of the festival and it will be celebrated from Thursday 3rd until Saturday 6th December, bringing together galleries from Spain and Portugal – a brilliant celebration, in spite of the crisis!  The fair’s coordinator, Rafael López has confirmed that it has been a difficult year but the only reason soe of the galleries have not been able to participate is problems with space.  In fact, there will be 120 artists taking part!

It’s a great event for Salamanca, a stunning city which has won the capital of culture prize and continues to promote cultural activities to its residents, language students and university students – all of which give the city a great mixture of cultures, alllowing for wonderful events such as this exhibition.

Salamanca - a great place for art!

It’s also great news for up and coming artists in Spain and Portugal given the show will have a section for emerging artists.  Thus the event really is at the cutting edge of contemporary art and so not to be missed!

Between the firms which will be participating there are the following from Salamanca Artis y Benito Esteban and from León, Cubo Azul.  Furthermore, coming all the way from Lisbon is Carlos Carvalho!

A great venue for new art!

Exhibitions such as this one are a great opportunity for langauge students to add some highlights to their trip, they provide social opportunities to practise Spanish and get an idea of the most modern and dynamic side of Spanish culture.  It’s also a great way to support new art and go home having seen something different and really made an effort to integrate into the most cultural side of what is a city with so much to offer!
