Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

When you say Spain, food is one of the first things you think of.  Be it the ham, the rioja, the sherry or the olive oil, tourists come to Spain and return home laden with ideas for Mediterranean cooking.  And quite rightly, Spanish cuisine is some of the best in the world!  A fact which makes it the perfect choice to open the world’s first gastronomic university.

Complete with the technology and lab resources to explore such things as the chemistry behind what is taste, the university will offer its students the chance to learn their craft under the practised eye of Ferran Adria, the owner of top restaurant, El Bulli.  Joining him will be British Heston Blumenthal, a chef from Berkshire’s celebrated Fat Duck restaurant.

The building work began last month in the picturesque city of San Sebastian and will be finished in time to accept students from September 2011, in a building especially designed to resemble a stack of plates.  A perfect choice of cities, San Sebastian already boasts 16 Michelin stars.

So why not look into a course which is new, cutting edge and favoured by world bests?  It’s also a great chance to come and learn Spanish in Spain.

Coming in a group? Check out our check-list!

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Organising a group trip abroad can be really quite stressful – whether you’re a teacher in charge of a class or the elected friend of a group, it’s your job to ensure everything runs smoothly, everyone has fun, everyone is satisfied with the price and everyone returns safe and sound…Lots of pressure for when you’re meant to be on holiday too!  Well, we can help.  Here we give a check list for a group trip to Spain, to ensure everything from the planning to the enjoyment of your time in Spain is flawless, meaning you can relax more, knowing you and your group have taken 100% advantage of the trip.

A group having fun in our activities!

A group having fun in our activities!

First thing’s first, how are you going to travel to Salamanca?  From Madrid airport, there are now buses running direct, meaning there’s no long trip accross the capital to get to the bus/train station.  This is a big plus for those travelling in large groups – especially when each group member is carrying a lot of luggage!  The timetables for the buses are available online, meaning you can buy your tickets before arriving to Spain – another plus for those travelling with large numbers, another step of the journey arranged!  We recommend to leave an hour between landing time and when the bus leaves to collect luggage.  We can also arrange this transfer and so if you want it, then send us an e-mail and we’ll go ahead with the booking!

So now you’re in Salamanca, and ready to start class, how will the classes be?  If you’re travelling in big numbers, then we can arrange the groups to be kept together, or have them mixed with other students at the school.  We have an online test to determine Spanish ability which can be taken before travelling to Spain, meaning we can arrange the groups according to level of Spanish (and again, it’s another step in the journey which is sorted before arrival!).

If you’re a teacher, maybe you’d like to do a course yourself?  If so, then let us know!  This is really worthwhile doing, especially bearing in mind the teachers coming with larger groups will get their course for free!

Regarding the courses, it’s best to let us know as long as possible before arrival just exactly how you would like the course to be.  Do you have any specification?  Maybe you’d like us to focus on topics which will be coming up in exams?  Then let us know!  This way we can prepare resources and ensure that you are taking 100% advantage of the time in Spain.

There is also the chance for you, as a group leader/teacher, to take an hour and teach a little yourself!  This keeps the students up to date with the programme they are following in their own country and is a great opportunity for everyone to re-group, give feedback and talk about their experiences so far!  The school is highly equipped with teaching materials for use – just let us know whether you need them or not!  To ensure all is available, however, do let us know in advance – only this way we can organise what classrooms are free for use!

And regarding payment – we can help you with this!  Do you need a total budget or a budget per person?  We have long experience in organising group trips and so however it is you want the course, we’ll do our best to satisfy!

And lastly, outside of the classroom, what will your group be doing at night?  The school organise many activities in Salamanca but you too can ask our advice for planning an excursion or activity.  Salamanca really is a city with so much to do that there won’t be a minute for your group to be bored!

Supporting art – and young people – locally!

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Have you heard of the Espacio Joven? It’s a centre in Salamanca designed for and by young people.  Offering advice on everything from living and employment to health and travel, it’s a great resource for Salamanca’s youngsters ages between 14 and 30 years old.

A main feature of the centre is their support for local artists.  Offering a place to display their work, no matter what the material, the centre is actively promoting creativity in the city, which counts with one of the best Bellas Artes faculties in Spain.  The elected space is of 200 square metres, plenty to accommodate any artist.  Recent exhibitions  include “Caleidoscopio“, “Walking Broadway“, “Doria Paredes” and “Me Myself and I“.

With views like this, how could you not be inspired?

Salamanca really is a city thriving with artists – with galleries such as DA2, where not so long ago Erwin Olaf exhibitied a selection of his works, and famous home grown artsists such as Pablo García – an artist who studied at the Faculty of Bellas Artes whose selection of photo-paintings, texturised on canvas really impact on his audience.

A great resource for young people, not only is it artsists who benefit but any young person too!  The centre organise excursions, have a lawyer on site to advise, can help with benefits and grants, help young people find a job and help look for accommodation – making life all the more easier for new students to the city – especially Erasmus students who may not be familiar with the way Spain do things.

Another highlight of the centre is what it has to offer in the way of resources.  There’s free Internet (great for school prjects and saving on cyber cafe fees!) and also a free meeting roomto be used – for ten people.  Promoting these resources amongst young people not only gives the young people with ideas opportunities but encourages young people to think outside the box for ways to use the resources to their best advantage.  This is something which makes Salamanca so famous for it’s univeristy life, the city is thriving with students with exciting plans, all helped to be realised by centres such as the Espacio Joven.

Another great point is the training offered, giving the young people of Salamanca a chance to widen their horizons and boost their CV for when it comes to finding a job – another aspect of life which the centre can help with!  Not only do they have many jobs listed, they will also help you to compile your CV and so make the most of any job opportunity which may come your way!

The Espacio Joven really is a great resource and something you should doubt in going to find.  It really could make your year abroad (if you’re studying Spanish in Spain for example!) a lot easier and more enjoyable!

Another Spanish Oscar!

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Spain’s top director, Alejandro Amenábar, has doen it again – he’s directed another top hit worthy of not just national recognition  but international recognition too.

A well deserved Oscar for Alejandro Amenábar

A well deserved Oscar for Alejandro Amenábar

Having the biggest budget ever for a Spanish film, over 50 million Euros, it’s another possible Oscar for Amenábar.  A great way to learn Spanish, watching film in Castillian is a fun way to practise what you learn in the class room! Always remember that you can watch Spanish films at Mester – we have a film library and often put showings as part of the activity programme for students to boost their Spanish and give

Agora tells the tale of Hipatia, a philosopher, astrologer and mathematician from the beginning of the 5th century  who was finally lynched for having alternative thoughts to the church.  As well as this controversy, there is also the aspect of feminism which is dealt with by Amenábar.  Hipatia was a unique woman and thikner for her time, something which ultimately cost her her life.

If you are interested in Spanish film, another film you may enjoy is Limits of Control.  By Jim Jarmusch, it’s a mystery set through various cities and villages in Spain.  The nameless main character, known only as the Lone Man, has a mission which involves the several meetings he has throughout the film, all of which begin with the line “¿usted, no habla español verdad?” (you don’t speak Spanish, right?”).

Or if it’s Amenábar you really like, then see cult hit “Abre los Ojos” (the Spanish version of Vanilla Skies), or “Mar Adentro”, another controversional film dealing with the theme of euthenasia.  What’s next for the director we don’t know – whether it’s Hollywood now the Oscar has called or more personal touch, unique film making, either way, we can’t wait!
