International festival coming to Salamanca!

Friday, May 14th, 2010

From the 30th May 2010, Salamanca will be playing host to some top names from the worlds of art, music, theatre and literature…All of whom will be performing throughout the golden Castilla y Leon city in some of the most historic, beautiful buildings the city has to offer (the Plaza Mayor, the Casa de las Conchas, the caves, the University buildings…), creating a wonderful ambiance, a memorable experience for any visitor!  The FACYL festival is here!

All the sites for the shows!

The concerts and readings will be free and being in the heart of the city, access is easy for each and every person of the city.  For this reason, the programme has been designed to be as varied and as interesting as possible – bringing in top international names as well as smaller, unknowns, set for stardom.  It’s a great way to get involved with the city, see the historic buildings being used at their best and meet new people, not to mention open your eyes to what’s new on the art and music scene!

At Mester Spanish Academy we’ve had a look through the programme and picked our highlights of the festival – have a read, tell us what you think and, of course, let us know should you have any suggestions!

FACYL

Firstly we draw attention to a British long running band who’ll be performing on 11th June in the Plaza Mayor, The Go! Team.  This indie/funk/pop six person band (including two drummers!) from Brighton have been doing the festival scene for a good few years now, something which gives them confidence to take to their shows with  energy and an air of spontaneity, making for great excitement!  The lead singer, Ninja, is a unique talent who ensures the crowd not only enjoy the music but feel part of the show too, this isn’t a show to spend sitting down!

…However, if it’s sitting down and the quieter spectacles which most attract you, then why not check out what’s on offer in the Casa de las Conchas?  As well as literary workshops, there will be poetry readings, stories and short film exhibitions.  A highlight of the festival in this venue is “Lecturas Cosmopolitas” on 3rd June at 18:30.  The evening will  be comprised of a selection of readings from authors from all over the world, reading with their own unique accent/voice…a truly international night!  Another evening set to be enjoyable for any literature lover is Tuesday 1st June at 22:00, when Salamanca’s very own Victor Balcells presents “Yo mataré monstruos por ti” (“I would kill monsters for you”).  Accompanied by DJ Jesus Aparicio, the poet and writer will recite a selection of humoristic-tragic tales, dealing with a variety of modern themes!

Top British band, The Go! Team

Moving from the spoken word to the more visual, there will be a selection of street art throughout the city to enjoy, even during your usual daily trips around the city!  On the very first day of the festival – at 22:00 in the Plaza Mayor – we’ll be able to see the wonderful choreography of Orbite 2010.  On a giant steel girder, some 20 metres off the ground, the aerial dance artists will wow spectators with their dramatic, unique routines.  More down-scale is the art of Kumulus, with their “Tout va bien” street show.  Throughout the city, thanks to them, you’ll be able to see something strange in the publicity adverts…imagine if they came to life…

Camerata Flamenco Project

Back to the music scene, but somewhat quieter than The Go! Team, are the concerts in the caves.  From typical Spanish flamenco with the Camerata Flamenco Project on 2nd June to Odaiko, a Galician band which explores multiethnic music ranging from Oriental to African to Latin-American to Galician. A great eye opener for new music!

…Whatever it is you decide to do, enjoy it, try see some things that you wouldn’t have seen before (it’s all free and in the city centre, you have nothing to lose!).  It’s a great experience to add some highlights to your language learning experience, widen your horizons and enjoy the Spanish summer nights!

Learning week videos – from Salamanca!

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

A couple of our regulars to the Spanish school in Salamanca have made a couple of videos all about the language learning experience here!

Marcello and Angelo are from Italy and regularly bring over groups of students from their university to learn about tourism in Spain, as well as the necessary Spanish!  Their trips always include visits to local hotels, as well as talks from people very relevant in the industry.  They were nice enough to take some film footage of their experience here, including the beautiful architecture of Salamanca (the golden stones, the Plaza Mayor, the Casa de las Conchas, the University buildings, the Roman Bridge, the cathedrals…the list is endless!), the Mester Spanish school (great for if you’re interested in a course here!), the hotels (where the students learnt about the tourism industry and business in Spain) and the other excursions they did (the museum in Alberca for example!).

The group trips from university are always a great success at Mester – the students have varied days, meaning they’re always entertained and learning new things, with something to look forward to the next day!  We design the programmes working alongside the course supervisors of the university to ensure it is completely apt and appropriate to what they are studying.

As well as giving them the chance to learn about the certain relevant aspects of Spanish culture (business, work, travel…) and the specialist vocabulary, they see people in careers which they might possibly think of for themselves in the future – a first hand experience of career guidance!  This opportunity helps students to focus on their future, giving them real motivation for when they are back at home studying.  It also stimulates their imagination, prompting them  to consider jobs they may not have thought of before.

It’s also a great bonding experience for the group and will certainly be a highlight of their university course, as well as a chance for them to meet friends and make contacts from all over the world – taking part in the activity programme of the school, exploring the city, going on excursions, talking to locals… The activity programme organised by the school, as well as the cultural events in Salamanca, help this bonding process – there really is choice for everyone!  From cookery classes to guitar lessons to excursions to other cities to typical Spanish meals, film nights, art conferences, history talks, sports competitions and tapas tours throughout the city, the students don’t have a second to be bored in!  Whats-more, all this interaction and social activity boosts the Spanish learnt in the classroom no end and helps the students become capable of using their Spanish in a social environment, a very important aspect in becoming fluent and comfortable with a language.

Should you be interested in a group trip to learn Spanish in Spain, don’t hesitate in contacting us – we’ll coordinate with you and tailor the course to meet your needs.  Also – don’t forget to add us as a friend on Mester to keep up with all the news, see the photos and videos and make contacts!

What to do this month in Salamanca?

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

For the next couple of months in Salamanca, there’ll be plenty to choose from to boost your Spanish language learning experience – no matter what your taste! Here we have selected a few of the highlights which will be taking place in the city over the next few weeks to inspire you to go out and enjoy the Spanish culture, practise your new-found language skills in a social environment and open your eyes to all what’s new in the world of art, culture, music and theatre.

Art from DA2

Art from DA2

Starting with something quiet, there’s the new exhibition in DA2, from young Argentine artist Sol Martínez.  Her sculptures, made in white ceramic clay, with a minimilist approach are a unique take on what are very day-to-day objects.  If you enjoy the art, you will also find, in the same gallery, two other exhibitions:  Merrie Melodies and Arctic Hysteria. Whilst Merrie Melodies explores the world of drawing, cartoon, illustration and design, putting a dark spin on themes often associated with childhood, Arctic Hysteria is a varied selection of works from a number of Finish artists – from film and music presentations (do check out the Chicago Complaints Choir!) to photography and large scale installations.

Away from the music scene, there’s a lot of choice too – from theatre to cinema to monologues.  Examples being the theatre production “La Dama del Alba” on Saurday 8th May at the Liceo Theatre (Calle Toro) and the presentation of the winning works of poetry and novels from Salamanca on the same day, Saturday 8th May, in the Plaza Mayor at 18h.

Also we remind you that there’s the Castilla y Leon International Festival of Art coming to Salamanca for a couple of weeks from 30th May – a huge event with many international music names playing (including “The Go! Team“!), lots of street art and spectacles in all the great monuments of Salamanca!  Get planning what you’ll see now!

No matter what your taste is, there really is something for you.  And also, don’t forget, there’s an activity programme for Salamanca run by Mester Spanish School itself!  Examples being a tapas tour through the city, a typical Spanish dinner, guitar, salsa, and cookery classes, film nights, culture conferences and language exachanges – all of which give you the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, make friends for life, get to know the Spanish culture and practise your new found language skills in a social, fun atmosphere, consolidating the Spanish you have learn in the classroom!  Your time in Spain to learn Spanish is something to be taken advantage of and these activities are a great way to do it!
