It’s carnival time in Spain but never more so in Santa Cruz de Tenerife! Here they will be celebrating over ten days of party – including music spectacles, dance shows, fancy dress competitions and processions of floats. If you can’t make it to Tenerife however, don’t despair! There’s plenty going on in mainland Spain – Cadiz and Seville for example – so you’re sure to find somewhere to celebrate!
It’s a time to be studying Spanish in Spain! Not only is it carnival time but we’re approaching Easter, when there’ll be many processions throughout the cities – an opportunity to see something completely different from the culture of home! But before all the processions start, there’s celebration to be done!

Fantastic spectacles in Tenerife!
From 11th February until the 21st Spain will be celebrating the annual Carnival. Centering in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spanish people, tourists and those studying Spanish in Spain will have the chance to enjoy a whole host of activities from dance competition, fancy dress tournaments, concerts, processions and general good fun! Over one million people from all over the world are expected to travel to Tenerife to celebrate the world’s second largest festival, only beaten by that of Rio de Janeiro (something which has promted people to twin Santa Cruz with Rio itself!)! In fact the festival’s so importantthat in 1980 it was declared a festival of Tourist International Interest and the city aspires now to be recognised as a World Heritage Site.
If you can’t make it to Santa Cruz de Tenerife however, don’t worry! Cadiz, near our Mester Seville Spanish school, has festivals nearly as big! And great beaches to enjoy and relax on post-party! Like in Tenerife, in Cadiz there will be floats, fancy dress, singing, dancing and all night party!

Some of the amazing floats!
If you’re in our langauge school in Salamanca, you won’t miss out either! There’s plenty going on in the city to enjoy from the theatre and concerts to modern art at the DA2 gallery and poetry readings at the Liceo theatre. It’s a great time to be in Spain learning Spanish – to see how the Spanish live for party and do it better than anyone in the world!
