Arts Festival in Salamanca!

Friday, June 4th, 2010

So you’re here on your Spanish language trip and want to make the most of it?

Good timing!  For the next couple of weeks in Salamanca, you’ll be able to take advantage of the FACYL festival!  With concerts from international stars in historic, beautiful buildings such as the Plaza Mayor and the Casa de las Conchas, poetry readings, street art, dance shows, fireworks and more, you won’t be bored!  There’s something for everyone, from DJs playing late into the night to daytime entertainment for kids – brilliant if you have your family over here visiting you in Spain!

The FACYL programme

A yearly hit, the festival continues to get bigger and bigger – attracting international music names such as British indie/funk band “The Go! Team” who’ll be playing towards the end of the summer festival…Who follow in the footsteps of stars such as Rufus Wainwright and Chicks on Speed, both previous festival headliners.

The festival really is a great opportunity to see what’s new in the world of music, art and culture – both in Spain and throughout the world.  It’s also a chance for you to meet new friends, have some fun nights out and really take advantage of the Spanish hot summer nights.

Given the entertainment often doesn’t start until late, you can make the most of the night by going for a typical Spanish dinner first  – Spanish food being a frequent top point in language students’  trips here.  Why not try Van Dyck for tapas? It’s cheap, with many places to try and a real Spanish experience.

Putting these highlights in your language learning trip will make it an unforgettable experience so get out there now!

Salamanca Activities for December!

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

There’s a new selection of activities available for the people of Salamanca and the students who study Spanish here.  Ranging from art exhibitions and concerts to monologues and musicals, there really is something for everyone and the majority and a very student-friendly price!

To kick start the Christmas season, for one month in Salamanca there will be ice-skating available.  With a two-for-one deal on Wednesdays and special prices for groups, it really is an economic way to get into the Christmas spirit (and a fun exercise too!).

For a little quieter activity, the “Descubriendo Belén” exhibition is now open at the Sala Caja Duero, until the 10th January.  Fitting in with Christmas, it’s a vision of the birth of of Jesus from the point of biew of the artsist José Luis Mayo Lebrija.  There is a series of nativity scenes with realist figures, naturalist environment and hints at traditional nativity scenes.  It’s a great way to enjoy the build up to Christmas and see work from an artist so important in his sector.

And remember, if it’s art you’re interested in, not far away from Salamanca in Palencia, there’s a pop-art exhibition featuring work from vital artists of that sector – including the legendary Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns.  Art fans hav until the 3rd January to make the way to see it  – and it really is worth the trip – Salamanca is surrounded by fantastic places to which to take excursions!

The Fiestas Arrive to Salamanca!

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

Every September Salamanca becomes the place to be in Spain.  The streets fill with music, art, theatre, good atmosphere and casetas – little outside bars serving a speciality tapas, wine, beer and other refreshments.

People from all ages can enjoy the festival: there is music for every and a great family atmosphere, it really is a great place to visit!

Highlights include a concert from La Bandina, a folk band from Asturias, and Pitingo, a soul/flamenco fusion act.  The concerts typically take place in the Plaza Mayor – a venue which could not be bettered for impact, beauty and atmosphere.

During the day however, the square turns into a base for some of the most cutting edge street art.  The Always Drinking Marching Band have gained fame throughout Spain for their unique way of celebrating the festivals.  With a great dose of humour they walk the streets, entertaining the passers by with the fun and fresh music for which they are so acclaimed.  Other street art will include a Moulin Rouge show from the Troula Animación, Teatro Due Mondi group, from Italy and La Furtiva’s Esferic – a bizarre sight, two people who live their (show) lives within giant transparent bubbles , surely you won’t have seen such a spectacle!
Something which you should definitely not miss is the firework display which will take place on the Roman Bridge, at 10pm on Sunday 7th September.  The city looks beautiful from this view point and it is bettered still with the elaborate  firework display.  It’s a great way to start the night, from which you can go on to tour the casetas, see a concert and enjoy some of the street theatre.

This is one of the most exciting times for Salamanca and is a great way to get to know the city, to explore streets you’ve never been to and to open your eyes to the rich culture the city boasts. It’s there to be taken advantage of!
If you do take the time to come to Salamanca for the fiestas, why not combine your trip with a language course? Being able to communicate with the locals will give you the inside track on the best places to visit during your stay!
