Salamanca celebrates Noche Blanca

Tomorrow, June 27th, Salamanca celebrates the Noche Blanca, the White Night. All evening the historic centre of the city is going to be full of events on the streets! The museums are open late, there’s music in the streets, night visits up the Cathedral for beautiful lit-up views of the city, theatre in the streets, the University Choir, Ballet and Breakdancing!

Here you can see some of the best events listed here below, or pick up a brochure from the tourist office in the Plaza Mayor! The events are free and all over the city, you can’t miss the celebrations even if you try!

In the Plaza Mayor there are things going on from 20,45 until 2,00 in the morning, when the band Freddy Antúnez, a rock band, start playing. At 1,00, just before, there’s also the group Folk on Crest playing in the square.

In the Iglesia de la Clerencía, in front of the Casa de Las Conchas, there’s the Salamancan Choir at 22,30 and the Jouth Orchestra at 23,15. In Patio de Escuelas there’s Jazz in the street with Velma Powel, a singer from Chicago at 22,30.

The Casa de Las Conchas is open until 2,00 and at 0,00 there’s a concert of Necorita, an improvisational group. In the Museo de Salamanca there is a guided visit and a Monologue by Alejandro Lucas being repeated all night, from 22,00 until 1,00.

In the Cental Market there’s all sorts of stands for you to see, and is open until 1,00. The stands include jewellery, furniture, jewels, leather and a Photographic Exhibition, followed by an acoustic concert! In Plaza de Anaya you can take a night time trip around the Ierónimus project in the Cathedral which is going to be open until 1,00 where you can get some night-time views of Salamanca!

Patio Barroco, Santa Domingo exhibitions, Patio de la Salina, Karaoke in the Plaza de las Agustinas. The Automation museum is staying open too, and there’s a concert from the Annuba choir at 23,30. There’s even more going on, especially in the Rúa, the Plaza del Corrillo next to the Plaza Mayor, the Caves, a ballet in the Teatro Liceo and Flamenco by Diego Carrasco in the Fonseca college!!

Salamanca’s 5th Arts Festival

This fornight Salamanca is celebrating it’s 5th Annual Arts Festival. This year the Festival runs from the 29th of May to the 13th of June.

The festival is a huge celebration all over the city and involves all sorts of different activities; with regards to music there are concerts in the Plaza Mayor, in different buildings over the city, including the Casa de las Conchas, Parties and concerts in different bars and clubs across the city. There are also street shows, art exhibitions, street art, theatre, poetry and loads of other things.

There are night time events and activities too, it’s not only during the day. There are the concerts in the square, including artisits Cycle, Catpeople, The Sunday Drivers and Macaco. There are pretty pink mannequins all over the city, as the official colour of this year’s festival is pink! And the Shells on the Public Library, Casa de Las Conchas all have a pink tie!

On June 6th they are going to turn the city pink, making the entire Rua Mayor pink for the night! There are also reading and spoken word exhibitions, with people telling short stories and jokes. There’s even Breakdancing, DJs and graffiti across the city!

The Festival even has a Facebook page where you can check out more information, a blog and an official website. For tickets the prices are 15€, reduced prices are 10€ and 6€ for students and can be bought from the Teatro Liceo on the Calle Toro.

Trips around Salamanca on foot!

During all of May the town hall of Salamanca is offering free trips around the city to discover the history and art of the city on foot. The trips start in the Plaza Mayor and are running 3 different routes:

Every Monday of May the trip on offer is “Escenarios de la Guerra de Independiencia en Salamanca”, the Scenes of the War of Independence in Salamanca. The trip starts, as always, in the Square, going to the Cuesta de Ramón y Cajal, then passing by the  Colegio Mayor Fonseca, Plaza San Blas, Cuesta de Independecia, and finally by the Iglesia de la Purísima.

Every Tuesday is the “Via de la Plata, Camino de Santiago”, the Silver Route, the North exit to the Camino de Santiago. This route starts in the same place, the Plaza Mayor, and goes via the Calle Zamora, Plaza de los Bandos, Plaza San Boal, Iglesia de Carmelitas and finally the Iglesia San Marcos.

The third route which goes on Wednesdays is  “Iglesias en los alrededors del Parque de San Francisco”, Churches around Saint Francis Park. The trip goes via Plaza de los Bandos, Iglesia San Juan Bautista de Barbalos, the Parque San Francisco, Iglesia Vera Cruz, Iglesia de la Anunción and the Capilla San Francisco.

The trips cover most of Salamanca and offer you the chance to see and have explained some of the most beautiful and interesting monuments for free! They leave every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of May from the town hall in the Plaza Mayor at 16:30. The trips are free, but as there is a limit of 50 people per trip you need to pass by the town hall the day before you want to go to sign up and ensure that you get a place!
