Learning week videos – from Salamanca!

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

A couple of our regulars to the Spanish school in Salamanca have made a couple of videos all about the language learning experience here!

Marcello and Angelo are from Italy and regularly bring over groups of students from their university to learn about tourism in Spain, as well as the necessary Spanish!  Their trips always include visits to local hotels, as well as talks from people very relevant in the industry.  They were nice enough to take some film footage of their experience here, including the beautiful architecture of Salamanca (the golden stones, the Plaza Mayor, the Casa de las Conchas, the University buildings, the Roman Bridge, the cathedrals…the list is endless!), the Mester Spanish school (great for if you’re interested in a course here!), the hotels (where the students learnt about the tourism industry and business in Spain) and the other excursions they did (the museum in Alberca for example!).

The group trips from university are always a great success at Mester – the students have varied days, meaning they’re always entertained and learning new things, with something to look forward to the next day!  We design the programmes working alongside the course supervisors of the university to ensure it is completely apt and appropriate to what they are studying.

As well as giving them the chance to learn about the certain relevant aspects of Spanish culture (business, work, travel…) and the specialist vocabulary, they see people in careers which they might possibly think of for themselves in the future – a first hand experience of career guidance!  This opportunity helps students to focus on their future, giving them real motivation for when they are back at home studying.  It also stimulates their imagination, prompting them  to consider jobs they may not have thought of before.

It’s also a great bonding experience for the group and will certainly be a highlight of their university course, as well as a chance for them to meet friends and make contacts from all over the world – taking part in the activity programme of the school, exploring the city, going on excursions, talking to locals… The activity programme organised by the school, as well as the cultural events in Salamanca, help this bonding process – there really is choice for everyone!  From cookery classes to guitar lessons to excursions to other cities to typical Spanish meals, film nights, art conferences, history talks, sports competitions and tapas tours throughout the city, the students don’t have a second to be bored in!  Whats-more, all this interaction and social activity boosts the Spanish learnt in the classroom no end and helps the students become capable of using their Spanish in a social environment, a very important aspect in becoming fluent and comfortable with a language.

Should you be interested in a group trip to learn Spanish in Spain, don’t hesitate in contacting us – we’ll coordinate with you and tailor the course to meet your needs.  Also – don’t forget to add us as a friend on Mester to keep up with all the news, see the photos and videos and make contacts!

New Art Arrives in Salamanca!

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

From the beginning of December Salamanca’s Palacio de Congresos, as part of the Salamanca City of Culture scheme, will be hosting the exhibition “El Mundo es un Escenario” (“The World is a Stage”), a selection of pieces from different artists, working with different mediums such as photography, sculpture and painting.

It’s the fifth edition of the festival and it will be celebrated from Thursday 3rd until Saturday 6th December, bringing together galleries from Spain and Portugal – a brilliant celebration, in spite of the crisis!  The fair’s coordinator, Rafael López has confirmed that it has been a difficult year but the only reason soe of the galleries have not been able to participate is problems with space.  In fact, there will be 120 artists taking part!

It’s a great event for Salamanca, a stunning city which has won the capital of culture prize and continues to promote cultural activities to its residents, language students and university students – all of which give the city a great mixture of cultures, alllowing for wonderful events such as this exhibition.

Salamanca - a great place for art!

It’s also great news for up and coming artists in Spain and Portugal given the show will have a section for emerging artists.  Thus the event really is at the cutting edge of contemporary art and so not to be missed!

Between the firms which will be participating there are the following from Salamanca Artis y Benito Esteban and from León, Cubo Azul.  Furthermore, coming all the way from Lisbon is Carlos Carvalho!

A great venue for new art!

Exhibitions such as this one are a great opportunity for langauge students to add some highlights to their trip, they provide social opportunities to practise Spanish and get an idea of the most modern and dynamic side of Spanish culture.  It’s also a great way to support new art and go home having seen something different and really made an effort to integrate into the most cultural side of what is a city with so much to offer!

Castilla & Leon Literary Guest of Honour!

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

It’s an important time for Spanish literature, particularly that of Castilla-Leon.  It is this Spanish province which has been invited to Guadalajara, Jalisco in Mexico as guest of honour – with special attention going to Miguel Debiles, a Spanish writer born in Valladolid, 1920, it’s the biggest literary hispanic festival and so certainly an honour indeed.

A tent of 1705 sq metres will bring together the works of this particular Spanish region – not just basing itself on the books but with a wide range of academic and cultural programmes organised by the Junta de Castilla y Leon (the government organisation responsible for the province) too.

Approximately 50 editors from Castilla and Leon will take their catalogue of publications to the fair whilst there will also be a great amount of authors, academics and other professionals from the world of literature who will make a contribution during the 60 literary acts – including public lectures, presentations of books, homages, conferences and seminars.

The work of Miguel Delibes, one of the most known names of Spanish narrative, will enjoy the special attention in a programme of activities and will be the object of analysis by different representations of the world of literature.

Also present at the Mexico fair will be several other authors of the Spanish region, all of whom hold the Cervantes prize; names such as Jorge Guillén (1976), Gonzalo Torrente Ballester (1985), Francisco Umbral (2000), José Jiménez Lozano (2002) and Antonio Gamoneda (2006).

The promotion of Spanish and the encouragement of reading are strategies employed by the Junta de Castilla y Leon which will reinforce the promotional push they want to put on literature and culture.

And it’s not just in Mexico where they are taking action!  The Plaza Mayor of Castilla y Leon’s Salamanca will be the Feria del Libro Antiguo (The Old Book Fair) from the 24th October until the 8th November – a great cultural event which will be participated in by 21 book shops!

With support from large companies such as the Caja Duero, financing has reached over 50,000 Euros and the event has been recognised as one of the most important in the cultural year of Castilla y Leon.  A novelty this year will be a workshop and a stand for valuing old books – something surely to interest collectors from all over Spain!

Other activities will include the expositions El papel de chocolate y El placer de leer, the second of which will be comprised of photographic work from the competition of the town hall of Salamanca, whose prizes will be handed out on the 24th.

Salamanca is a brilliant city in which to learn Spanish – there’s lots going on, it’s beautiful and the fact that there’s a book fair here means there’s even more reason to come so why not check it out today?

Group programs in Salamanca

Monday, November 10th, 2008

At Mester we have a huge number of students of all different nationalities, many of which arrive in Spain for a short stay either alone or with friends to get to know the Spanish way of life and to improve their Spanish. During their stay they participate in the scheduled activities and they mix with the other students at the school, being able to combine their choice of accomodation and school in Spain’s beautiful city of  Salamanca.

Another way of working with us is organising a group trip from either your school or university abroad. In this case Mester can oganise your trip so that it is unforgettable and rewarding; We will organise your trip according to your needs and objectives, we will even organise your airport transfer to Salamanca. Our standard courses consist of 20 classes a week, the content of which can be organised partially or totally by our teaching staff, by yourself or by the members of staff accompanying the group, it’s your choice. The timetable and amount of classes each week can be agreed upon and you will have access to a huge amount of didactic material, large classrooms and audiovisual material complete with computers and projection equipment.

You can choose between the different types of accomodation, the most popular of which are Family Stays (very important for your progress), Halls of Residence and for over 18s we have Private Student Flats and Shared Apartments. Combining your trip between the different schools is one of the best ways of combining tourism and learning in one trip.

The activities can be a main focus of choosing a group trip, and we organise personalised programs for each group, organised and agreed between Mester and the trip leader. The program can be made up of any of the activities that Mester offers, with a timetable compatible with the Spanish course, and we can facilitate the privacy of the group, that is to say your students can be the only ones to participate in the agreed activity if this is preferred.

We can also mix the students with the rest of the Mester students during classes, in the accomodation and during the activities, at the discretion of the group leader.

In any case, with group programs Mester is fully open to adapt itself to your needs, and we would be delighted to negociate any request or need particular to your group. Please contact us using this form with any queries you might have or check the program example:
