Spain in the movies! And there’s a Mester star too!

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

From acclaimed director Carlos Iglesias comes “Ispansi” (Spanish people), a new film telling the stories of the “war children” who fled from Spain at the end of the Civil War.

Director, Mr Iglesias

The roles of these orphans are all played by young Spanish people, students from the classes of Spanish language and culture in Neuchâtel, Jura and Berna – an original and fruitful addition to an already stellar film.

Carlos Iglesias hit fame through the highly regarded “1 Franco, 14 Pesetas“.  Both actor and director, this first film was somewhat autobiographical, the second film tells the story of many – those children who had to run from Spain after seeing their parents killed in the Civil War .  So important is this story to the director, he has travelled as far as Switzerland to tell the tale!  With days starting in  the freezing cold air at 7a,, it really is dedication to the cause!  Especially when one bears in mind that they are to have spent six weeks filming in the freezing region of Jura, resting only Sundays and working with over 30 children.

What makes the film especially interesting is that two of its stars, Adriana and Esteban Fernández, are the children of a teacher who’s here with a Mester group!  Mari Carmen Barigiela is a Spanish teacher in Switzterland, here with a group to learn Spanish in Salamanca.  Indeed, she must be so proud of her children – the film’s set to be a great success!

Film is important here at Mester.  As a part of our weekly activity programme, we organise film nights – a chance to learn about the culture of Spain in a fun way, to meet and interact with fellow pupils and to make the most of you language learning holiday.

How did Spain do at the Oscars?

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

In recent years, Spanish cinema has taken off, not just in the homeland but throughout the world – with the likes of Penelope Cruz impacting on the Hollywood scene!

Spain's favourite, Penelope Cruz

So, it wasn’t a surprise that this year’s Oscar ceremony had more Spanish eyes on it than ever!  Unfortunately, the Madrid sweetheart Penelope Cruz  was beaten by Mo’nique for her work in Precious – though Penelope already knows the glory of an Oscar, having won already.

What did get through the nomination stage, however, and win, was “El secreto de sus ojos”, by Campanella, which took the award for the best non-English speaking film.  It sure must have been nice to collect the award, so far from Spain accross the ocean, knowing that many compatriots were there in the audience: not only was Penelope Cruz (wearing a stunning Donna Karen gown) there, accompanied by her Spanish actor boyfriend, Javier Bardem, many others came to represent Spanish cinema, including a group from Kandor, the production company of Malaga’s Antonio Banderas, who was there to support the recent short film “La dama y la muerte”.

El secreto de sus ojos, Spain's hit film

There was also some controversy at the awards – the much hyped Avatar film only received three of the nine prizes it was nominated for, whilst the ex-wife of Avatar’s director, James Cameron, Kathryn Bigelow walked off with six awards for her “El tierra hostil” (in English, “The hurt locker“).  In fact so great was her achievement, Cameron jumped out of his seat in elation for her.

The Hurt Locker - Kathryn Bigelow's hit film

Spanish cinema, although not the principle part of the Oscars, there’s still a long way to go of course, is gaining a great importance nowadays and it’s up to us – as Spanish learners – to promote it outside of Spain.  So start by checking out our film nights, as part of the Mester activity programme, and later, by discussing what you think with your classmates, you’ll better your Spanish too!

Celebrating Spanish cinema – the Goyas!

Friday, February 19th, 2010

The Spanish Oscars – AKA the Goyas – have been given out – with a few suprises!  A great celebration of Spanish film, the event gains more and more coverage each year, with the stars now getting recognised beyond their home country, even in the dizzy heights of Hollywood!  Also, importantly, many international stars are recognising the importance of the event and choosing to attend too – some even being nominated and going on to win prizes!  Although Rachel Weisz didn’t take the Best Actress prize home for her work in “Agora” (the new Alejandro Amenábar film), losing out to Lola Dueñas for “Yo, también”, to be nominated is certainly  great honour for the stunning actress.

Being directed in Agora

In fact her work in Agora did come under the spotlight in several other catagories.  The film was nominated for Best Direction, best screenplay (which it won!), best music, best photography (another one won!), Best Artistic Direction (again, a winner!)…and several more!

Other big winners on the night were “Celda 211″ and “Yo, también”.  Celda 211 in fact won Best Film – a highly prestigious award….And along with it, Best Director (Daniel Monzón) and Best Actor (Luis Tosar).  “Yo, también”‘s Lola Dueñas won the Best Actress award (a difficult feat given she was up against Madrid’s favourite Penelope Cruz!) and the film also feature the best song (“Yo, también).

What won the best entire soundtrack however was “Los Abrazos Rotos”, Pedro Almodovar’s hit film.  The ever-controversial director, whose muse is Penelope Cruz, wasn’t a big winner on the night.  Although bad news for him, it was perhaps good news for the Spanish film industry, that there are more people coming through and that the market isn’t entirely dominated by the director’s films.

Spanish film is gaining so much more importance throughout the world – in recent months we’ve seen Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, starring Penelope Crus and Javier Bardem, hit the big time, Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise filming in Seville and “Vantage Point”‘s premiere come to Salamanca, the city in which the film was based.

Filming in Cadiz

There are also Spanish stars going abroad – Alejandro Amenábar making English speaking films (The Others, Ágora…), Penelope Cruz starring in many hit films including the star-studded “Nine” and Paz Vega also hitting the big time in Hollywood.

Be sure, if you are studying in Spanish school Mester, to enjoy their film nights as party of the activity programme.  They’re free and a great way to boost your Spanish and learn about Spanish culture!

Another Spanish Oscar!

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Spain’s top director, Alejandro Amenábar, has doen it again – he’s directed another top hit worthy of not just national recognition  but international recognition too.

A well deserved Oscar for Alejandro Amenábar

A well deserved Oscar for Alejandro Amenábar

Having the biggest budget ever for a Spanish film, over 50 million Euros, it’s another possible Oscar for Amenábar.  A great way to learn Spanish, watching film in Castillian is a fun way to practise what you learn in the class room! Always remember that you can watch Spanish films at Mester – we have a film library and often put showings as part of the activity programme for students to boost their Spanish and give

Agora tells the tale of Hipatia, a philosopher, astrologer and mathematician from the beginning of the 5th century  who was finally lynched for having alternative thoughts to the church.  As well as this controversy, there is also the aspect of feminism which is dealt with by Amenábar.  Hipatia was a unique woman and thikner for her time, something which ultimately cost her her life.

If you are interested in Spanish film, another film you may enjoy is Limits of Control.  By Jim Jarmusch, it’s a mystery set through various cities and villages in Spain.  The nameless main character, known only as the Lone Man, has a mission which involves the several meetings he has throughout the film, all of which begin with the line “¿usted, no habla español verdad?” (you don’t speak Spanish, right?”).

Or if it’s Amenábar you really like, then see cult hit “Abre los Ojos” (the Spanish version of Vanilla Skies), or “Mar Adentro”, another controversional film dealing with the theme of euthenasia.  What’s next for the director we don’t know – whether it’s Hollywood now the Oscar has called or more personal touch, unique film making, either way, we can’t wait!

Seville Warming Up for Film Festival!

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

The Andalucian city of Seville is getting ready for the 6 November when, until the 14th November, film lovers from all over the world will flood the city hoping to see some of the most cutting edge Spanish and international film.

As well as the Prize of Honour going to Mr Fernando Trueba, there will be a competition of 15 films.  Of this film selection, 9 have female directors – a sign of the times that it’s not just Spanish cinema which is breaking news but that women are becoming predominant characters in the industry too.

The excitement for the festival's building...

The country invited to the competition this year is the United Kingdom.  It will be represented by London productor Jeremy Thomas who’ll make homage to British cinema with a selection of films directed by Nicolas Roeg.  Also featured will be a select montage of films from new British talent.

Returning to what’s hot from Spain, the 7th of November will see one of the climax points of the festival.  It is on this day when the nominations of the European cinema prizes will be announced.  Between the 48 films up for the awards, there are three Spanish films: Los abrazos rotos, de Pedro Almodóvar; Camino, de Javier Fesser, y Retorno a Hansala, de Chus Gutiérrez.

Seville really does have pulling power regarding big names:  those attending the festival will be lucky enough to be able to see Sören Staermose, the productor of the hit film Millennium. Staermose will open the industry forum, which will include, amongst other attractions, seminars about distribution, digital cinema and co-production between Spain and the United Kingdom.

A great example of this fusion of production is a film which will be featured in the Official Section: Triage, a co-production of Spain, Ireland and France, directed by Danis Tanovic. The film, which will open the festival, counts Paz Vega and Colin Farrell in its cast and is sure to be a hit amongst the crowd!

Seville really is a great place to choose to hold a film festival – the University’s Faculty of communication is thriving and well represented by a group of students making a mini-online series, Malviviendo.  It’s also a great place for the international guests to experience Spain – with a great temperature, stunning architecture and a warm and friendly atmosphere, it is often inspiration for studying Spanish.

Whether you visit the city itself or watch the festival from the comfort of your home, it’s sure to be an exciting 9 days!
