Spanish students get a taste for Spanish food!

Our students enjoyed a delicious breakfast of chocolate and churros this Tuesday, a rich Spanish breakfast treat which was more than adequate to provide a boost of energy for the morning classes!

This well-loved Mester tradition is always popular with our international students – a real taste of Spain and a great way to experience Spanish life first-hand.  Churros are a sweetened waffle like food, deep-fried and commonly served with chocolate or coffee. Bought in churrerías, specialist shops or vans which also provide customers with hot drinks, these “Spanish doughnuts” are also a popular way to end a night out – given it’s not until gone 6am that the main Spanish bars close, it’s no wonder that on the way home many late-night revellers are craving their breakfast!

Spanish food is always a highlight of the students’ Spanish learning trip in Spain – not only do they have the chance to enjoy the typical Spanish breakfast, but they also have the opportunity, thanks to our varied Salamanca activity programme, to enjoy a tapas tour through the city, a cookery class, a typical Spanish “cena” and a paella night.  In fact, many of the students could even take the opportunity, given they live together in a student flat (one of our most popular accommodation choices) to try to make churros at home.  Of course, should they be living with a Spanish family, they will certainly have had much experience eating Spanish food!

The Mediterranean diet is a great one – known around the world for its health and longevity properties.  Though chocolate and churros are not necessarily the example of a good meal (though a treat once in a while doesn’t hurt!), all the fish, veg and olive oil eaten here certainly is!  In fact it’s not just the healthy practical side of food which makes Spain famous in the gourmet world – Spanish restaurateur Ferran Adrià is the owner of El Bulli - voted best restaurant in the world four years running!  Furthermore, Spain’s not short of Michelin stars – Castilla y Leon was awarded a good few in the last listing of awards!

Whether it’s the greasy doughnut side of Spanish cuisine you choose to enjoy, or the more elegant Michelin starred restaurants, one thing’s for sure – you won’t be disappointed!  As well as an in depth knowledge of Spanish, a few cookery tips and ideas are a great thing to take home for your language learning trip in Spain – and we think that these students agree, that churros are a definite!

It’s strange…The world’s best restaurant – voted as such for four years in a row- is set to close in two years!  El Bulli, a Spanish restaurant owned by Ferran Adriá, will be closing its doors as a normal restaurant and will be turning into a private foundation.

This announcement was made at the Santiago Gastronomic Forum on Monday, shocking food lovers and restaurant critics alike. The new foundation, according to Adriá, will be a non-profit venture and futhermore, he’d like to create a new encyclopaedia, dealing with the advances in cuisine over the past 15 to 20 years.  Whatsmore, he’ll be holding congresses and will introduce 25 scholarships for chefs and waiter every year.

It’s great news for food lovers, the once incredibly exclusive “best food of the world” is now diffusing through the levels and those who can’t get on the infamously long waiting list for El Bulli (nor afford the steep (to say the least!) prices) will maybe get the chance to eat at the restaurant of a Adriá-trained chef – which isn’t too bad!

Ferran Adriá’s food isn’t necessarily typically Spanish food.  He works a lot with molecular-gastronomy – working with science to give foods new flavours, new textures and potencialise their richness.  In fact, in his new Gastro-University, there’s even a lab to work on these processes!

Though we mustn’t forget that Spanish food is some of the best in the world! World’s first “gastronomic university” – in Spain!

When you say Spain, food is one of the first things you think of.  Be it the ham, the rioja, the sherry or the olive oil, tourists come to Spain and return home laden with ideas for Mediterranean cooking.  And quite rightly, Spanish cuisine is some of the best in the world!  A fact which makes it the perfect choice to open the world’s first gastronomic university.

Complete with the technology and lab resources to explore such things as the chemistry behind what is taste, the university will offer its students the chance to learn their craft under the practised eye of Ferran Adria, the owner of top restaurant, El Bulli.  Joining him will be British Heston Blumenthal, a chef from Berkshire’s celebrated Fat Duck restaurant.

The building work began last month in the picturesque city of San Sebastian and will be finished in time to accept students from September 2011, in a building especially designed to resemble a stack of plates.  A perfect choice of cities, San Sebastian already boasts 16 Michelin stars.

So why not look into a course which is new, cutting edge and favoured by world bests?  It’s also a great chance to come and learn Spanish in Spain.

World Vegetarian Day Hits Spain!

On Thursday 1st October 2009 animal lovers of the world will reunite to celebrate World Vegetarian Day – a special event first organised by the North American Vegetarian Society way back in 1977.

This animal-friendly tradition has spread to Spain, with the entire first week of October being named as World Vegetarian Week – an event backed by the Unión Vegetariana España.  Though Spain’s ratio of vegetarians to meat-eaters is actually reasonably low compared to the likes of the USA and Great Britain, the trend for turning away from meat is growing, as more and more vegetarian options are becoming available throughout the bars, restaurants and supermarkets here on the Iberian Peninsula.  World Vegetarian Day itself is in fact expected to be a catalyst for a batch of newly turned vegetarians – the promoters of the day are encouraging non-vegetarians to participate in the celebration by trying out vegetarianism for 24 hours (or, if they’re willing, the entire week or month!).  A great deal of those who do this don’t actually turn back to meat-eating, after finding their vegetarian experience a lot easier than they thought and enjoying the wide range of vegetarian health benefits.

Promoters of the day are also encouraging people to draw attention to the cause by wearing the special edition t-shirts, making speeches, putting up posters and, most importantly, going – and helping other people to go – vegetarian.

Suggestions for helping other people unite to the cause are organising a special vegetarian meal or picnic, putting a list of vegetarian options on the menu should you have a restaurant or cooking vegetarian snacks for your work colleagues, class mates or friends.

For many people of Spain the day will be quite a change of routine – meat is a big part of the gastronomy here and so many people are reluctant to give up the tradition, or simply they don’t know how to, having eaten meat for all their lives.

Luckily we have some great Spanish vegetarian meal ideas!

-       Spanish Omlette

Made from solely eggs, potatoes and onions, this is a great dish which can be adapted to any taste – be it by adding peppers, courgettes, spinach, tomotoes…the list of potential ingredients is endless!

-       Cheese Croquettes

A great alternative to the traditional ham and cheese “croquetas” of Spain, they really are a treat!

-       Gazpacho

A cold soup made from tomatoes, cucumber, garlic, olive oil…Incredibly healthy too!

-       Patatas Bravas

A spicy dish made from fried chunks of potatoes served with a hot sauce and cooling mayonnaise mix.

-       Champiñones al ajillo (garlic mushrooms)

Even suitable for vegans, this dish is a great accompaniment to any meal!

The students at the Mester Spanish school in Salamanca have already started the celebration with a cookery class based on the famous tortilla española!  What will you do to celebrate World Vegetarian Day?
