Arts Festival in Salamanca!

Friday, June 4th, 2010

So you’re here on your Spanish language trip and want to make the most of it?

Good timing!  For the next couple of weeks in Salamanca, you’ll be able to take advantage of the FACYL festival!  With concerts from international stars in historic, beautiful buildings such as the Plaza Mayor and the Casa de las Conchas, poetry readings, street art, dance shows, fireworks and more, you won’t be bored!  There’s something for everyone, from DJs playing late into the night to daytime entertainment for kids – brilliant if you have your family over here visiting you in Spain!

The FACYL programme

A yearly hit, the festival continues to get bigger and bigger – attracting international music names such as British indie/funk band “The Go! Team” who’ll be playing towards the end of the summer festival…Who follow in the footsteps of stars such as Rufus Wainwright and Chicks on Speed, both previous festival headliners.

The Go! Team

The festival really is a great opportunity to see what’s new in the world of music, art and culture – both in Spain and throughout the world.  It’s also a chance for you to meet new friends, have some fun nights out and really take advantage of the Spanish hot summer nights.

Given the entertainment often doesn’t start until late, you can make the most of the night by going for a typical Spanish dinner first  – Spanish food being a frequent top point in language students’  trips here.  Why not try Van Dyck for tapas? It’s cheap, with many places to try and a real Spanish experience.

Putting these highlights in your language learning trip will make it an unforgettable experience so get out there now!

What to do this month in Salamanca?

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

For the next couple of months in Salamanca, there’ll be plenty to choose from to boost your Spanish language learning experience – no matter what your taste! Here we have selected a few of the highlights which will be taking place in the city over the next few weeks to inspire you to go out and enjoy the Spanish culture, practise your new-found language skills in a social environment and open your eyes to all what’s new in the world of art, culture, music and theatre.

Art from DA2

Art from DA2

Starting with something quiet, there’s the new exhibition in DA2, from young Argentine artist Sol Martínez.  Her sculptures, made in white ceramic clay, with a minimilist approach are a unique take on what are very day-to-day objects.  If you enjoy the art, you will also find, in the same gallery, two other exhibitions:  Merrie Melodies and Arctic Hysteria. Whilst Merrie Melodies explores the world of drawing, cartoon, illustration and design, putting a dark spin on themes often associated with childhood, Arctic Hysteria is a varied selection of works from a number of Finish artists – from film and music presentations (do check out the Chicago Complaints Choir!) to photography and large scale installations.

Coming to Salamanca, Anni B Sweet!

If music’s more your interest, then the next few months in Salamanca brings lots of exciting dates for you, the highlight being the 3rd “Festival Sala Marte de Música Independiente“.  From the 5th to the 7th of May, the CAEM venue in Salamanca will play host to the lastest talent on the independent music scene, including Anni B Sweet, Juana Molina and Louie Austen.  As well as all this, from 20th to 23rd May the CAEM will be holding a flamenco show by dance legend Carlos Saura and there’ll be the Young Symphony Orchestra playing on the 28th May in the same venue – a huge choice for any music fan!

Away from the music scene, there’s a lot of choice too – from theatre to cinema to monologues.  Examples being the theatre production “La Dama del Alba” on Saurday 8th May at the Liceo Theatre (Calle Toro) and the presentation of the winning works of poetry and novels from Salamanca on the same day, Saturday 8th May, in the Plaza Mayor at 18h.

Also we remind you that there’s the Castilla y Leon International Festival of Art coming to Salamanca for a couple of weeks from 30th May – a huge event with many international music names playing (including “The Go! Team“!), lots of street art and spectacles in all the great monuments of Salamanca!  Get planning what you’ll see now!

No matter what your taste is, there really is something for you.  And also, don’t forget, there’s an activity programme for Salamanca run by Mester Spanish School itself!  Examples being a tapas tour through the city, a typical Spanish dinner, guitar, salsa, and cookery classes, film nights, culture conferences and language exachanges – all of which give you the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, make friends for life, get to know the Spanish culture and practise your new found language skills in a social, fun atmosphere, consolidating the Spanish you have learn in the classroom!  Your time in Spain to learn Spanish is something to be taken advantage of and these activities are a great way to do it!

A weekend in the city! Spend it in Salamanca!

Friday, March 5th, 2010

What are you going to do this weekend?  If you’ll be in Salamanca then surely you’ve got a lot planned?  There’s so

Cultural Schedule

much to do!  In fact for the whole month, you could do something different every day and never be bored!

Divers

If you’re into art, then there’s a selection of new exhibitions starting in DA2.  Though you’ll have to wait until the 30th March, the exhibition “Artic Hysteria” is definitely worth the wait.  New and up and coming artists, as well as some very well known ones, all from Scandinavia, will be displaying their work, all of which is a little strange and challenges our conception of utopia, the future, dreams, failure and the paranormal.  Fear, solitude and conflicts in the state of mind play a central theme in this exciting exhibition which is as unique as it is stunningly memorable.

The white rabbit??

Staying with the art theme, there are some other exhibitions starting in DA2 (a venue with a story itself! It used to be a jail!).  Juan Zamora’s “Where one sun” will be there until 2nd May – a strange collection of controversial cartoons, composed using materials as basic as pen and pencil.  Also in DA2 is “Merrie Melodies“, a drawing and video exhibition from a collection of artists from 1931-1969, the Golden Age of animation for children.  Telling stories through drawings, these iconic pictures will certainly make for a good afternoon’s entertainment!

If you’re more interested in music, however, then a concert of Estopa, on their Gira X tour, will surely appeal!  They’ll be coming to the Multiusos Sanchez Paraíso venue on the 26th March and for 25 Euros, you can  go see them.  With a new style, their music is upbeat and you’ll certainly recognise a few songs from the radio and nights out in Spain.

In fact it’s a busy month for music in Salamanca – as well as Estopa, Bilbao’s Fito & Fitipaldis will also be coming to the Multiusos venue.  Hits include “Antes de que cuente a diez” and they currently hold more than four months in the top ten of top sellers.  Furthermore, they’ve been nominated as the “best rock album” and some recent music awards!  High praise, no?

Tricicle

For something a little quieter, however, then why not see what’s new in theatre? On Friday and Saturday 9th and 10th of April, the Garrick tricicle will be coming to the CAEM.  For only 16 Euros, you can enjoy a great comedy.  David Garrick is an English 18th century actor, so talented in comedy that doctors recommended his acts as a magic remedy!  It is said now that children laugh up to three hundred times per day, whilst adults laugh only 15 times!  Something we have to change!  So go and see Joan Garcia, Paco Mir and Carles Sans in this briliant comedy act and have some fun!

If you’ve not found anything which appeals to you here, or if you have yet want more information, then download the full culture programme for March here! And make the most of you time studying Spanish in Salamanca, it’s there to be taken advantage of!  To follow our activties, see our Google Calendar for events in Salamanca

What’s New in Salamanca for 2010?

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Now we’re in the New Year , there’s a whole host of new activities and events that have come to Salamanca – ideal for those doing a Spanish course in the city who will benefit from the cultural insight and have a chance to use the Spanish they learn in their Spanish school outside of the classroom.

When are you free?

When are you free?

There really is something for everyone – from theatre to art exhibitions and dance to concerts.  Some is of a very Spanish nature (the flamenco show of “Flamenco en 4 Estaciones” for example) whilst some of are a more international nature (“El Holandés Errante” for example – a Czech opera from Prague).  So whatever it is you feel like seeing, Salamanca´s activity programme have something for you.

A new production to Salamanca!

A new production to Salamanca!

Something we would advise not missing out on, however, would be the aforementioned flamenco show.  “Flamenco en 4 Estaciones” gives a real image of this dance-art as fun, accessible and enriching musical expression.  For children, it is an ideal introduction to an art form which really could change their life!

The most traditional of Spanish dances!

Another highlight of the recent activity programme is the Erwin Olaf exhibition at the DA2 gallery.  The Dutch artist presents “Darts of Pleasure” – a selection of his best work from 1984 to 2009. Described as classic, contemporary, ironic, transgressive (and much more) – it would seem he is an artist not easily defined.  His impacting photography reflects our conception of identity, fashion, consumerism and other major themes in today´s ever changing world.  Having been given the whole ground floor of DA2, Erwin Olaf is an important artist with something to say and until 21 February, you can find out what.

Staying with art, why not check out a product of the University of Salamanca’s Bellas Artes faculty, Pablo García.  His show, Desideratum, is also showing at DA2 – this time until 24 January.  He presents us with a selection of photo-paintings, texturized on canvas.  His art searches for the sinister aspects of day to day imagery – with rabbits and batman featuring in his work, it´s surely like  nothing you´ve seen before!

If exhibitions aren´t for you, however, then there is still plenty going on in Salamanca to entertain you!  “Me Llamo Rachel Corrie” (My Name is Rachel Corrie) is showing at the Liceo Theatre and tells the story of a North American lady who travelled to Palestine and was subsequently killed.  Considered a martyr by some yet a traitor by the American people, this true story discovered through her personal diary and e-mails and is something to remember.

A tense true story

So whatever it is you feel like doing outside of class time, take advantage of the cultural programme – it´s a great way to meet like-minded people and open your eyes to new cultures!

New Art at DA2 Salamanca

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

In September and October Salamanca’s DA2

All the world is a Stage

All the world is a Stage

will be opening their doors to Mester students for a guided tour of the new expositions. A great opportunity to see some of the most cutting edge art, it’s an experience which really will open your mind and not something to be missed!

The exposition comprises works from Marc Bijl, a collection called Un Mundo Feliz (A Happy World), articles from the Coca-Cola collection and other works from over 40 national and international artists.

Marc Bijl is a Dutch artist who works with a variety of mediums – paint, video, photography, installations and sculpture.  It’s his first exposition in Spain and will be made up of some of his best work of the last decade.  From the outset visitors will notice the social and political implications of his work, something which forces the spectator to consider not just the aesthetic side of his work but the moral side too.  Though his works have the capacity to shock, the controversial aspects really do provide whoever that sees his work with food for thought, something vital for a piece of art to be successful and something which really does leave an impression.  One of his most unique pieces if that of a figure of Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft (Tomb Raider), coming towards us with her body completely covered by petroleum, gun in hand and a lit cigarette between her lips – surely you will never have seen such a sight!

Marck Bijl

Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft

The Un Mundo Feliz collection, rather different from that of Marc Bijl, centres on the creation, production and distribution of images from the social and political fields.  With an aim to take all this to public space, it creates a collective place where designers debate non-commercial questions and ideas.

Doing things outside of your comfort zone gives you something to discuss; it’s a great way to interact with your fellow students when learning a language and can provide a base for an oral class or composition – and it’s fun too!

If these expositions appeal to you then don’t hesitate in taking a trip to DA2 – and if you’re a student at Mester, then leave a comment so we can tell you about a guided tour – the best way to take advantage of such an exciting opportunity!
